. a word of caution .
I’m not really the biggest fan of Tuesdays, but today ended up being a wonderful day despite almost starting off in a disastrous way (mad rhymes, yo!). See, my morning routine has been the same for so long now, that my brain pretty much switches to auto-pilot as soon as I stumble into the kitchen. Boil water. Toss in oats. Add spices. Gather up mix-ins. Assemble. Eat. Simple motions, minimal thought involved; I can basically go through the whole breakfast oat-making process thinking about ballerina llamas wearing polka dot tutus and still end up with a pretty darn good bowl of oats.

My addiction to adding pudding to oatmeal isn't really letting up... There's just something about the combination of chocolate, almond butter, banana, and firm eggy-oats that always leaves me wanting more. I've eaten this same bowl for... many, many days in a row now, and I would call it a rut, except that it's just too darn good to be classified as rut material... at least for now.
Yes, auto-pilot is a wonderful thing indeed; although, after this morning’s fiasco, I’m considering switching it back to manual again so that I can start paying a leeeeetle bit more attention to what I’m doing in the kitchen, and consequently increase my chances of avoiding disaster (because a bad breakfast IS a disaster)…
See, while someone (not naming any names… Mom) was making dinner last night, she they carelessly replaced the spices on the spice rack without putting them back in their regular spots. Thus, when my hand reached for the cinnamon shaker this morning, it grabbed the oregano instead, and since my head was up in the clouds (not necessarily thinking about llamas and tutus), I failed to notice. Dis.as.ter.
Dash, dash.
Wait a second; what’s that smell? That’s not cinnamon…
Oh, %@&*$#! It was actually my nose that came to the rescue, lugging my brain out of la-la land and shocking it into action. Now, don’t get me wrong; oregano is a wonderful spice and all, and savory dishes certainly have their time and place, but not at breakfast (no offence to those who like savory breakfasts).
Savory lunches? Sure…

Good thing autumn is on it's way, because then my cravings for warm soup won't be so out of the ordinary. Taking care to make sure I grabbed the RIGHT spices when lunch time rolled around, I made a bowl of curried-apple pumpkin soup with plenty of curry powder, cumin, cinnamon, ginger, and cloves.
And dinners? Definitely…

I've been experimenting with the spices that I add to my stir fries, and right now I'm hooked on the combination of garlic powder, ginger, cloves, fennel, and star anise. I've also been trying out different noodles, and I'm loving these whole wheat egg white spirals that I found a while back.
But breakfast isn’t breakfast unless it looks (and tastes!) more like this…

It may have been simple paranoia, but the only thing I could think of throughout my entire meal was "Do I detect a hint of oregano? No... Wait! Was that it? Hmm. Maybe not... THERE! No..." Before I knew it, I was all the way through my bowl, and I STILL couldn't tell if there was oregano or not...
Thankfully, I was able to react fast enough to prevent too much damage from being done. I scooped out the few spoonfuls of oats that were too far gone to be saved, added the proper spices, and plotted putting something very unpleasant in my mom’s morning tea (I didn’t). My oats were still extremely good, but I could swear that I detected a slight hint of oregano; it might have just been my mind playing tricks on me, though… In any case, take heed and pay attention to that spice rack!
. – . – . – .
In all seriousness, though, there is actually something that I’d like to caution you about. By now, I’m sure that we’re all familiar with gums (xanthan and guar; not Dentyne and Trident). They’ve been showing up on countless blogs around the blog world for quite some time now, and although I was late in jumping on the bandwagon myself, curiosity eventually lead me to give both a try.
Miracle workers. Godsends. Magical for their ability to thicken up a smoothie, and loved for their ability to help keep us fuller, longer. After my first trial, I was smitten, and the gums became a regular addition to all of my smoothies; or “soft-serves” as I began to affectionately call them.

Xanthan gum is made from little bacteria, which is why I was kind of resistant to try it from the get-go. I should've listened to my gut-feeling and avoided the stuff; it would have saved me an afternoon of excruciating pain and agony. Live and learn.
Their ability to thicken up a smoothie was a nice perk, but I’ll admit that I was probably more impressed by their ability to keep my hunger at bay for extended periods of time. What I wasn’t impressed by, however, was how they made my stomach feel… Bloated. Gassy. Crampy. Squirrely. Nothing too serious, but uncomfortable all the same. My body was sending me subtle hints that it wasn’t enjoying what I was putting in it, but I continued to ignore those hints in favor of satisfying disordered thoughts, and “filling up” in a not-so-healthy way.
Unfortunately, when subtle hints fail to do the job, the body turns to more drastic measures in order to get the message across, and yesterday, my body decided that it had had enough, and the gentle whispers it had used to try and get my attention up to that point turned into screams.

Although I love eating smoothies, I don't enjoy making them for two reasons. First, the blending process is insanely loud and obnoxious; I have to wear earplugs or I'm afraid that I might go deaf. Second, I'm not a big fan of cleaning the blender; I feel like I'm working against the clock, because as I'm busy slaving away at the sink, my smoothie is busy melting...
Enter the worst stomach pain and general feeling of malaise that I think I’ve ever experienced in my life. It was so bad, that I honestly thought I would have to take a trip to the ER; even my intense fear of doctors and hospitals wasn’t strong enough to deter me from just wanting the pain to stop. I felt like I was literally going to explode from all of the pressure in my body, and it wasn’t just in my stomach, either… I felt it in my limbs and head as well. It. was. terrifying.
The culprit? This seemingly innocent looking little guy…

It was a smoothie soft-serve no different than the ones I've had in the past. Almond milk. Strawberries. Vanilla protein powder. Gums. Ice. Kashi Honey Sunshine. Pretty normal stuff. The reaction, however, was anything BUT normal... Pain like nothing I've ever experienced, and the torturous thoughts of "Why the hell did I eat that?!" came in shortly after, only adding to my misery.
About half an hour after finishing a snack that I’d had several times before, the problems began; mildly uncomfortable at first, but gradually increasing to ER-worthy status. I’ll spare you the gory details, but I will say that it’s something I never want to experience again; and when I was finally lucid again by the end of the day (yes, it lasted almost all day), I promptly threw both of my gums into the trash to ensure that I wouldn’t get tempted by them in the future.
As it turns out, although xanthan and guar gums are generally thought to be safe, they are known to commonly cause side effects such as cramping, bloating, nausea, and diarrhea. People with IBS, narrowing of the intestines, or any other undiagnosed stomach problems are encouraged to avoid the gums due to their tendency to absorb tonnes of water and bulk up in the intestines, which could lead to severe and harmful reactions, like the one I experienced (but thankfully survived) yesterday.

Sadly, I've had to say goodbye to thick smoothies and go back to the thinner ones; but if straw-suckable smoothies will save me from the agony that spoonable ones caused me, then I'm willing to make that sacrifice... besides, they're still plenty tasty (and decently thick) when a frozen banana, vanilla protein powder, coconut milk, and ice are involved...
Truth be told, the whole ordeal could have easily been avoided had I just listened to my body and trusted my intuition instead of succumbing to disordered thoughts that revolved around a lingering fear of hunger. I thought I was past bulking up my meals and making myself sick in an attempt to keep hunger at bay, but apparently I wasn’t. Nevertheless, rest assured that I learned my lesson, and I’ll be twice as vigilant from now on to catch any more disordered behaviors that might still be hanging around.
Moral of the story? Don’t ever ignore the subtle messages you get from your body, because it will turn to more extreme ones, and those are… unpleasant, to say the least. If you’re hungry, eat food, because simply masking your hunger, besides being physically and mentally unhealthy, is usually rather uncomfortable as well.

Oh no, oregano and cinnamon are veryyyy different! Also I am so sorry to hear about your terrible stomach pain… I never knew that about xanthan/guar gum! Insane!! Great reminder to listen to your body’s signals. I’m glad you’re ok!
p.s. I need to try that pudding oatmeal immediately.
Ah, nasty . . . I’ve had a similar experience (horrible stomach pain after meals) but I don’t think it was related to any particular food, must have just been a stomach bug or something . . . Thanks for the heads-up though! And beautiful pictures as always!
Char xoxo
How terrible! I’m glad you posted this – my stomach is pretty sensitive so I’m sure any kind of gum would wreck havoc on my stomach. As for the spice mix ups, I’ve had some close shaves with putting chile powder in my coffee instead of cinnamon – that would NOT be a nice morning pick me up.
I actually just posted a comment on jessica (healthy exposures) blog the other day about this.
i think the gums can be used as “disordered thoughts in disguise.” we think “cool – a thick smoothie! and it’s natural!” but really… if we wanted a milkshake, we wouldn’t eat it. we replace dessert with thick smoothies and pretend to be happy… not kosher.
just my thoughts! so so so so so sorry about your stomach – if it makes you feel any better, i had a FOUR day stomach flu over the weekend. FOUR. DAY. STOMACH. FLU. WHAT THE HECK?!?
-r
I see Rebekah’s beaten me to it – but I remember her thoughts of “the smoothie is delicious enough all natural,” are what stuck with me most. I actually didn’t even know they had a filling effect, though – but absorbing water in the intestines definitely sounds like scary business. I’m so glad I decided to pass on the innocent-looking yet crazy expensive bag of xanthan gum at the store that day…and very sorry you had to go through all that pain. Stomach troubles are NEVER any fun. I hope you’re feeling better, though. And hey – now I’m not the only one not using gums in my smoothies!
Although – I totally hear you on the cleaning the blender thing. That’s why I put off hopping on the GM/smoothie bandwagon for so long – no joke. Doesn’t even make sense because honestly…What’s so different between cleaning the blender and cleaning a cutting board or pot or something? haha.
Speaking of pots – glad you were able to salvage your oats!
I get the same feeling after downing a smoothie made with xanthum gum too! While I love how thick the smoothie becomes, my tummy certainly doesn’t. However, I find that if I add more ice to my smoothie, it “thickens” up…sort of.
I hate it when breakfasts go wrong. It’s like a cue for a horrible day thereafter. I’m glad that you caught it in time and saved it though!
Wow, I am never going to try ether of those gums. That’s terrible! I’m so glad you started feeling better at the end of the day. Stomach pains are the worst
I can’t even begin to tell you how many times I grabbed the wrong spice and almost put it in my oatmeal. I almost put chili powder in it last week!
I feel the exact same way about cleaning the blender/playing beat-the-clock. That precious time that the ice and banana are melting takes away from the spoon-ability of my smoothie darn it!
That aside, I usually make my “smoothies” (more like banana softserves with a bit of milk and ice) as thick as possible. Ice, yogurt, oats and frozen bananas all thicken it up really nicely, and, if you’re into this sort of thing, avocado makes it really creamy. I haven’t tried frozen avocado yet, but I’m wondering if that’s anything short of awesome or cataclysmic.
Oh no! So sorry you went through that, at least now you know what to say to people who recommend xanthan gum to thicken your smoothies… And man, I was SO close to buying some of that, mainly because of all the bloggers raving about it. But, my tummy already has even minor-problems of its own, gums aside. So, I’ll pass.
Thank you for saving me a day of tummy/gut pain! Really, thank you.
& I know exaacctly what you mean about the blender. When I blend anything more than yogurt + strawberries, it includes extremely loud, drawn out noises, along with stopping + shoving ingredients towards the blade with my spoon, and occasionally removing the lid while it slowly swirls, just to help it puree all my madness together evenly.
I want a Vitamix, real bad.
Hmmm… sorry about the stomach issues! I’ve never experimented with gums before- if I do I know I’ll proceed with caution!
Auto-pilot is the best way to describe the first hour of my day (if I don’t work out in the AM). Anything in my breakfast routine that’s out of place would probably put me in a tizzy!
I am SO SORRY to hear about your horrible experience with the gums – i had read about this possible side effect and therefore have stayed away from them. I only tried guar gum once and was not impressed and also felt queasy after trying it. Stomach issues are definately the worst.
I now make all my smoothies without them – definatley not worth feeling horrible for!
Hope you are feeling better!!!! xoxo aimee
Wow girl! That’s awful!! But your body knows what’s up.. we just have to listen! Easier said than done. I’ve never experienced pain from the gums and I love the way they thicken smoothies.. but it’s not worth that pain!
Missed reading your blog! Hope you’re doing well!
Love you girl!
I only use xanthan gum cause I’ve never found gaur. And as you’ve seen on my blog I love making my pumpkin banana pudding with it! But thats about it and I don’t even make it that often. (partly due to the pain of having to clean the blender! Haha!) I have never experienced any pain afterwards though, and I eat just fine for the rest of the day after having it. I think it’s okay to still make you thick smoothies, but just not everday like you were! Treat yourself to a thick one maybe once or twice a week
<3 Tori
Sorry to hear about your reaction to Xantham gum. I’ve seen a lot of buzz about it on food blogs too, but as much as I love to make smoothies, have been sticking to my usual routine of banana, frozen fruit, liquid, and sometimes some greens. I get scared of new things sometimes – I’ve mentioned that before with stevia – and prefer to stick to foods that are more familiar, even old-fashioned. I guess in some ways it’s good that you tried it, to know now to avoid it.
It reminds me those Quorn products. I tried them once, thought they weren’t bad, but the second time I did, I had horrible stomach pains for hours. After the fact, I looked up Quorn, and found that many people have bad reactions to them, so now I know. (Have you ever tried Quorn?)
Glad you noticed the oregano ahead of time.
your pictures are really pretty.
sry about the effects of the gums on your body…i’m the same way with smoothies..i’m to lazy to make it..and i hate the clean up!
When you live in a house with my mom, who never puts anything in the kitchen in any semblence of order, you get used to things like that.
I’m sorry about your reaction to the xanthan gum… I have both gums, though I’ve yet to use the guar, which is, I guess, why I’ve never had such a reaction… I don’t use it enough! But that sounds like a really scary experience. Glad you’re okay!!
<3 <3
I am so sorry you had to learn about Xanthum gum the hard way. I have heard negative things about it but it seems to be in so many things that I never paid much attention! I have such a senstive stomach already that you can bet I’ll steer clear of this stuff.
I”m glad you didn’t have to hit the ER and I’m so glad you are feeling better!
I’m so sorry to hear about your tummy troubles, but thanks for sharing your experience! I was considering buying some gums, but I think I’ll wait a bit. I agree with you–I hate cleaning the blender. I’d rather do a whole pile of dishes than clean out the blender.
I’m glad to hear you were able to salvage most of your oats…there’s nothing worse than starting your day with a lousy breakfast!
I’m glad you were able to save your oats! I once did the same thing with cayenne pepper and unfortunately I had to throw that batch of oats in the garbage
well…that explains the “Oy” on my blog! Can I just tell you, when I was in treatment, we had tacos for dinner and our house chef confused the cinnamon and taco seasoning! yep, a bunch of ED girls had cinnamon tacos for dinner! hows that for trying to love food again! You know what I use as a thickener, i like using konjac powder! it works great and available online or at asian markets. And you know what also works? a little bit of oatmeal!
Ohh Amanda, you poor thing having to learn about the gums the hard way. It’s really interesting to find out about the effects that they’ve been having on people though. I myself didn’t jump on the bandwagon because like Rebekah, I just saw them as unnatural and not really necessary when my smoothies taste yum without being all thick like all the sugary laden fast food ones. I was just going to suggest what edenseats has, I blend oats or cereal into my smoothie to make it thicker and it gives it a nice texture I think

I’m glad you managed to save your oatmeal because yours are always amazing, it would be a disaster to ruin them! I still need to try adding pudding to some oats one day because that does sound lovely..I tend to be so uninventive at breakfast and just have cereal and dried fruit!
Ohh and do you have a recipe for your soup?! It looks gorgeous! And I’m a huge curry flavour fan too
Nicky xx
Sorry you had to learn your lesson the painful way! thanks for that piece of advice. i havent tried those gums, but even chewing gum gets me all cramp filled-so i think ill be giving the others a miss! im the same in the morning, on automatic, god forbid someone come between me and my oats!
I’m so sorry that the smoothie caused you so much pain!
I’ve seen those gums all over the blogsphere, but I’m not sure I would want to try it now!
Oh, and oregano in sweet oats? Yeah, I wouldn’t try that one
Me being the weirdo that I am, I’m now curious to taste what oregano really does taste like with oats! Hehe. I’m glad you threw out that gum my dear, that’s one reason I stay away from weird ingredients, and eating is so enjoyable, that it’s so much nicer to eat a little extra rather than bulk out existing stuff.
Hope you are feeling all better now after that unfortunate gum encounter. Enjoy your coffee dates and shadowing
Sarah x
I am sorry you had such a shitty day!
Oregano instead of Cinnamon, bleah!! That’s not a nice day to begin your day! It’s like when you think you’re drinking water and it’s soda. It’s a shock! (don’t laugh: I ate some little stones once, thinking it were candy, because in fact comeone had put them into a candy box, ahah).
I don’t thinkI will ever try those gums, because I think they’re difficult to be found here, and because I read how nice they are, but also how many side effect they have. I prefer a nice not-so-thick smoothie.
I hope your Wednesday will be better!!
Xo
Juliette
Wow.. I’m both shocked and impressed.
I’m glad it’s over, because I would hate to think of you having to go to the hospital! Honestly, I am so thankful that you decided to write this post. I’ve been so tempted to try the gums but I haven’t because of the expense and because it’s not exactly available to me where I am living right now… but I always kind of wondered about them. I know that they are natural and everything, but that much bulk from such a little amount of substance is just a little unerving. Furthermore, I think my interest in buying them was more disordered than health-concious…. so I think I’ve decided to just forget about the whole ordeal.
To think of you squirming in pain makes me sad
As for the spices? HAH! You are too funny
I’m glad you were able to salvage your oats though… I agree that oregano just does not belong in breakfast!
<3 Tat
I thought it was just me and my ridiculous digestive system that reacted to xanthan gum (never found/tried guar). Now I understand why! The only words I can use to describe the effect are ‘bubbly’ and ‘oogly’. I have IBS so it explains an awful lot really. I haven’t had a reaction quite as bad as yours but I’ve had my fair share of *ahem* gas from xanthan smoothies. And they seem to make me feel quite dizzy/faint too
Very odd.
I think a lot of blogging trends can come from a disordered place. They all seem to centre around bulking things up with fibre to make you feel full, regardless of the effect on the digestive system. Oat bran, shirataki noodles, egg white puffs, etc. Xanthan gum is actually a baking ingredient and probably not meant to be consumed in uncooked or unprocessed forms. It’s most commonly used in gluten-free bread, and guar gum is usually used to thicken hair conditioners!
I really hope you’re feeling better now and thanks for this post!
*hugs*

I have the same problem with red peppers. I LOOOOVE them, but eat one and my stomach explodes…let’s just say NO ONE would want to sit next to me after a few of those. I love xanthan gum but haven’t experienced any discomfort yet. I’ll have to pay closer attention next time I eat some! Happy hump day love!!
Yikes, I hate stomach problems. I got food poisoning (from the campus dining hall) the other week, and it was awful. It lasted about 2 days, and I wanted to die. Now I’m so cautious of what I put into my mouth. If it tastes/looks funky, I no longer pull the “oh, it can’t hurt” thing.
At a restaurant once I mistakenly put sugar on my scrambled eggs instead of salt. As I was eating them I started saying aloud that my eggs tasted kind of different, sweet almost. Then everybody laughed when I realized why.
Love the blog!
Girl! I love my sweet breakfasts as well – I can only do savory oats around dinner time. Otherwise, it’s all about the fruit, peanut butter, and sweet almond milk for me. That had to totally stink to get the oregano shaker instead of the cinnamon one! Yuck! The hubby knows not to move any of my stuff or else there will be H*ll to pay!!
I have tried the gums as well too, but my body just doesn’t like fillers. It may have something to do with my gltuen/corn intolerances which are generally used as fillers! Even soy used as a filler can make my stomach hurt as well – last night I had GF pizza, but the pizza crust had canola oil and soy lethicin in it and my stomach hurt like crazy after eating it. Not quite as bad as it would have been if I were to have gluten or corn, but it hurt nonetheless. I hope you feel better today!
Oh WOW, I’m so glad you wrote this! I have had um, lets just say, ISSUES the past COUPLE of days from that xanthan crap. I gave it like 3-4 chances before I threw in the towel and returned what was left at the store yesterday. It made. me. miserable. This has been going on for a couple DAYS now and I’m surprised my stomach isn’t concave because I swear theres nothing left in there. This is probably TMI, but the smell is killer. It’s like chemicals from another planet or something. Disgusting!
Did you get my email the other day? I’m sure you get several, but wanted to make sure you got it.
Thanks!
Ashley S
The exact same thing happened to me! Well, not the exact same thing, but a very similar story. My mom loves steel cut oats and she eats them for breakfast every day but she hates making them herself…she just doesn’t like to cook anything, not even oats, so I go to her house and make a huge batch for her for the week. Anyway, once I was making them and I accidentally added cumin instead of cinnamon. I know its not the same as adding oregano, but still…weird. But I guess since it was such a big batch, she couldn’t taste it at all, and she actually said it was really good? I just laughed..
I’m so sorry to hear about your tummy troubles, hun! I never jumped on the “gum” bandwagon so I didn’t even know all of that information about them (the word gum just makes it sound like a scary ingredient to me…yeah I’m weird, but that’s why I never had a desire to try them…now I definitely never will). Anyway, I’m glad you are feeling better and that you were able to recognize that it was part of ED that you were still hanging on to. Remember, you are healthy now! Hunger is okay and it is a good thing. If you are hungry after a meal, you CAN eat more…and you should. You don’t need to go to desperate measures to avoid hunger. I know you know this! Anyway, I’m happy that you finally realized the gum doesn’t agree with you, because that sounds like an awful experience. Love you tons <3<3
Whoa! I hadn’t heard of this as an ingredient for home use before, but I will NOT use it now for sure!! That is so crazy!! I am glad you are okay!
Scott
Ack, that sucks about your little spice mishap! The thought of savory oats for breakfast honestly makes me gag. My body NEEDS sweetness in the mornings!
So sorry about your tummy troubles girl! I had no idea that gums could have that effect. Thanks for the heads up. I was thinking of buying some, but now I think I’ll refrain. I hope you’re feeling better now!
I’m so sorry to read about your unpleasant food experiences
But I’m also glad you shared your painful story with xanthan gum with us, because I was just about to buy it for the first time. I know we are all different and our bodies have different reactions to some kinds of foods, but it’s great you warned other bloggers about it. Your soup and stir fry look delicious, I am a big lover of spices too, especially garlic. I love that you saved your oats, most people I know would just throw it out and wasting food makes me always very sad for some reason.
Ohmigosh – just three days ago I made a green monster with loads of guar gum and had maaad stomach pains. I attributed it to the raw spinach I stuffed in it…but maybe it was guar gum? NO! There must be another way to create thick, lucious smoothies!!! D:
Im so glad that you were able to salvage your morning oats. I can’t imagine the shock of digging into a spoonful of oats, expecting sweet goodness, and tasting…well…oregano! Oi!

xoxo
The gum situation is scary! It’s also exactly why I have been avoiding my xanthan and guar gum as I’ve found that they cause me to get bloated, gassy and cramped – NOT fun and NOT worth it. I’ve found that using lots of ice or frozen fruit gets my smoothies thick and delicious just fine. No need for gums! Besides, they just made my smoothies taste kind of airy.
I’m glad you’re okay, Amanda. <3
Although i aint a cinnamon fan…….i’d DEFINITELY prefer cinnamon oats to oregano oats! Good job you noticed just in time..that coulda been a massive shock to the taste buds!
ARGH…that sounds like hell! Glad it “only” lasted a day though!!!! xx
Oh my gosh! I never would have thought that the gums would cause that! That’s so scary! I haven’t experienced symptoms as such yet, but if I do, I certainly will heed your warning! Gosh, thank you!
About the oregano…I’ve put cayenne pepper in my oats before, thinking it was cinnamon. I have also put cinnamon in stir-fry before, thinking it was cayenne pepper. (I can’t help it, they look the same, and reading takes too much effort!) They were both catastrophic (the oats moreso that the stir-fry)
Anyway, those oats look amazing, but I hope you’re not in a rut! You still thought your apple crumble oats were amazing despite the fact that you at them day-in and day-out for months! Enjoyable, yes, but variety is the spice of life, girl!
♥ always,
Alexandra!
Ahh, I´m sorry to read you went through such pain! I know exactly what you´re talking about! Actually I was wondering, why I didn´t see anyone in the blogosphere mention the mean side effects of gums. With me it´s fine, as long as I pause for two days in between. My tummy is pretty sensitive anyway and I have trouble digesting even the most common foods. But gums in deed are addicting – such a shame
Hope, everything´s alright now and you´re doing fine
xoxo Mel
i love the oregano story. i’ve never put the wrong spice in my food but i have lifted up the wrong side of the cap and DUMPED a ton of cinnamon in something. WHOOPS! good thing i love cinnamon. im sorry you got sick and hope you feel better!
Oh goodness. My spice rack is alphabetized so that’s never happened…thankfully! Could you post the recipe you use for that soup? it’s always intrigued me.
To me happened a similar “spice disaster” with chilli powder in my oats once and a second one with cinnamon istead of chilli powder on a savory dish…..uhhhhh….
Ohhh my gosh that pudding oatmeal looks amazing. I do the same thing with yogurt but never thought about pudding!! Mmmmm
Aww sorry about the spice thing! Looks delicious what you made for breakfast though!

Thank you so much for your encouragement. Your blog has really done so much to inspire me to do better.
The last time I made carrot cake I grabbed the mustard instead of the ginger. BIG MISTAKE.
I have had similar experiences with the gums… although I do still use them on occasion… I thought I was the only one suffering from the bloating, cramps, etc from them! They make smoothies so thick and good but if they make our bodies hurt, I think it’s best to NOT use them…
I have found that Agar Agar, a seaweed, thickens… although not exactly the same, it should not make your stomach hurt. Also, lecithin’s thicken and make all textures really creamy- that’s an idea.
Delish lookin’ smoothies, regardless.
I once threw A LOT of nutmeg into my yogurt parfait instead of cinnamon and I didn’t even notice it. When I ate a spoonful of it, it tasted way too strong and that’s when I noticed what happened. Then I added cinnamon, definitely more than usual, and I don’t think the taste was disastrous, just slightly stronger than usual.
Oh well, it happens. I’m glad you survived your ‘misfortune’ and I’m really sorry to read about the gums. (but still, I’m envious of your concoctions)
